  • ...since a 2-1 home success against AS Saint-Étienne on 25 February 2016
  •  Last season was just the second time in 22 years Manchester United had missed out on the UEFA Champions League
  • The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last 19 competitive fixtures at Old Trafford
  • In fact, United have not lost at home in a year, since their 2-1 defeat by Manchester City FC on 10 September 2016
  • Basel have not won in five European away matches (D1 L4)

Manchester United looking to make impact upon return to UCL...but will be wary of Basel

The Red Devils suffered a slight slip-up at the weekend as they drew 2-2 to Stoke, but it's never easy to play Stoke on the road. That result still sees Jose Mourinho's men on top of the table, albeit it marked the first time they've conceded all season after a blistering start. The hosts, however, will have to make do without two defensive options for this fixture. Phil Jones is set to serve a one-match ban whilst Eric Bailly completes a three-match suspension, leaving Mourinho with a huge selection headache in the heart of defense.

Despite the fact that Basel have failed to win their last eight European fixtures, the Swiss side have proven to be a frustrating opponent for Manchester United in the past. Out of their last four meetings, Basel have managed to draw two, win one, and lose just one. Whilst the Red Devils are heavy favorites to progress from a group that also includes Benfica and Russian outfit CSKA Moscow, they certainly wouldn't want to drop any valuable points - especially not on home turf.

As for Basel, they've had a rather insipid start to the term. They've earned just 11 points from their first seven games, which is ten fewer than last term and are winless in their last three coming into this tie.
