Bayer Leverkusen finished last season on a low note, and they haven't started this season off well, either. The hosts ended up on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline, albeit it's important to note they had the rather dubious honor of taking on reigning champions Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Leverkusen will likely be welcoming back Kai Havertz and Julian Brandt from injury, giving them more options in attack, but will need to address some of their defensive concerns as they aim to improve on their 12th-placed finish from last season.

Hoffenheim

Thanks to their fourth-placed finish, Hoffenheim qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history. However, the team, who are led by the youngest coach ever in the Bundesliga, were unable to find a way past Liverpool, and bowed out of the play-off rounds after losing 6-3 on aggregate. Nonetheless, Julian Naglesmann's side will have a shot at competing in Europe, as they now drop down into the Europa League and are set to find out their opponents shortly.

The visitors come into this game having narrowly defeated Werder Bremen, courtesy of a goal from Croatian striker Andrej Kramaric. Given that they are coming into this tie having recently featured in Europe, it remains to be seen if Naglesmann will rotate his squad.

If history's any precedent...an easy three points for Bayern?

Despite defending in numbers, Werder Bremen's approach did not pay off against Hoffenheim. Hunkering down meant that they did not create enough opportunities, and Hoffenheim finally got the breakthrough they were seeking late on in the match. As such, instead of the 0-0 draw they were aiming for and the point they wanted to claim, Alexander Nouri's side were left with nothing.

It was a surprising approach, perhaps, especially as they finished in a respectable eighth spot last term. However, given their bad history against Bayern, including being crushed 6-0 at the Allianz Arena last season, they will likely attempt the same ultra-defensive approach, whilst hoping to grab opportunities on the counter-attack.

Bayern Munich

As for Carlo Ancelotti's side, they will be looking for nothing short of three points. Manuel Neuer could make a return from injury here, but Jerome Boateng is still on the treatment table. That means that new signing Niklas Süle will be again given a chance to feature at center back and just so happened to score the first goal of the new season on his debut last Friday. Fellow new signing Corentin Tolisso is expected to feature in midfield after also scoring on his debut. And Arjen Robben, who has had his struggles with injuries, is also expected to be handed a start for this tie.
