Three historic sides make it to the UCL

Celtic, Sevilla & Napoli make it to the UEFA Champions League Group Stage

August 22, 2017 By Oscar Rojas
Maribor and Olympiakos complete the five teams to win the first five tickets for the top club competition in Europe.

Only five slots are left to be filled in the UEFA Champions League Group Stage, after five teams made it to the most competitive club tournament in the world.

The first team to have its name included in Thursday's draw was Celtic, who battled their way into the competition against Astana, in what turned out to be a goal scoring fiesta. The Scottish side made it to the Group Stage with an 8-4 aggregate despite losing the second leg 4-3.

In the games played a bit later, Napoli barely broke a sweat to beat Mario Balotelli's Nice. José Callejon and Lorenzo Insigne scored for the Italian side, who defeated the French outfit with a 4-0 aggregate.

Perhaps the team that suffered the most was Sevilla. Following their 2-1 win against Basaksehir, Los Hispalenses had to fight for their spot after being threatened by a late equalizer from the Turkish side. Eduardo Berizzo's men will return to Europe's most competitive tournament thanks to a 4-3 aggregate.

Olympiakos will also return to the UCL after beating Croatian side Rijeka with a 3-1 aggregate. Marko Marin's first-half goal was enough to end the Croatian team's hopes of shocking the Greek side.

The last team to get a UCL Group Stage ticket was Slovenian club Maribor. Darko Milanic's side earned a 1-0 win against Hapoel Beer Sheva, sealing their spot in the pots thanks to the away goal rule. The aggregate between these teams ended in a 2-2 draw.
