The Chinese Super League has been rocked with scandal that will gravely hurt their appeal to foreign players. According to reports (as per the Daily Mail), several of the country’s top teams have been accused of failing to pay their players properly.
The number of clubs involved in this scandal is over half – 13, to be precise. This recent development puts the league’s future under uncertainty, as the punishment could all but kill the season.
The clubs have until August 15 to settle this mess. Failure to solve their financial issue by that deadline could result in their omission from the Chinese Super League.
If that happens, only three clubs – Yanbian Fude, Hanan Jianye and Guizhou Hengfeng – would only be left to battle it out for the title.
This controversy involves some of the country’s biggest clubs, including Shanghai Shenua, Hebei China Fortune and Shanghai SIPG. These were some of China’s big-spenders that signed the likes of Carlos Tevez, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Oscar, and Graziano Pelle.
Four second-tier sides and one third-tier team have also been accused. The 13 Chinese Super League teams under accusation are Shanghai Shenhua, Shanghai SIPG, Beijing Guoan, Changchun Yatai, Chongqing Dangdai Lifan, Hebei China Fortune, Guangzhou Evergrande, Guangzhou R&F, Jiangsu Suning, Liaoning Whowin, Shandong Luneng Taishan, Tianjin Quanjian, and Tianjin TEDA.
The financial problems involving Chinese clubs could kill their shot at competing with Europe’s top leagues. With the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego Costa, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being linked with moves to the Far East, China may no longer be able to attract big names.
