The Swedish icon's career appeared to be over after a nasty knee injury, but Mourinho might have plans for the 35-year-old.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Man United career might not just be over yet. According to The Sun, the Swedish legend could be handed a new contract by the Red Devils despite his contract being expired.

The Swede had been making a storm in the Premier League, silencing his haters, until a serious knee during the Europa League clash with Anderlecht ended his season.

The former PSG superstar underwent surgery as a result and was thus tipped to remain on the sidelines until the New Year. Unsurprisingly, the 20-time Premier League champions released the 35-year-old, passing up the opportunity to renew his one-year contract for another 12 months.

Ibrahimovic’s road to recovery is proceeding better than initially expected. According to the British tabloid, he could be back in October.  Man United’s medical staff is impressed by Zlatan’s recovery, and Mourinho is thus expected to offer the Swede a deal until the end of the upcoming season.

The striker remained in Manchester despite being released by Man United. He works at the Carrington training complex with a full-time physio, employed by the veteran forward, to aid a quick return to the pitch.

Zlatan’s decision to remain in Manchester always left the door open for a new Red Devils deal. The attacker received offers from Major League Soccer, the Chinese Super League, and Premier League rivals; but Ibrahimovic’s true desire is to play at Old Trafford for another season.

Fans would love to see last season’s top-scorer in a Man United jersey once more. He helped the English giants reach the Europa League final and win the League Cup and Community Shield.

However, if offered a new deal, Zlatan will face stiff competition for that lone-striker role from newly-signed Romelu Lukaku.
