After their disappointing 2016/17 campaign in the Premier League, everyone expected Man United to spend big to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window. However, the 20-time English champions have made only one major signing so far – Victor Lindelof.
This has left Mourinho frustrated, according to the Guardian. After winning the Europa League, the Special One stated that executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will be tasked with signing Jose’s targets as quickly as possible.
Two important targets for the Portuguese boss are Alvaro Morata and Nemanja Matic. The Red Devils need a reliable goalscorer and their manager wishes to reunite with the Serbian midfielder – seen as a Michael Carrick replacement.
Man United head to the United States for the International Champions Cup. Mourinho wants his targets to travel with the squad for the pre-season to be ready to hit the ground running in 2017/18, and thus remains hopeful of completing the deals by Sunday.
Failure to do so could result in a rocky relationship between Mourinho and Woodward. Nonetheless, Man United understand the roadblocks in signing Morata and Matic.
Chelsea will not let their Serbian midfielder go until they have completed the Tiemoué Bakayoko deal. Real Madrid are interested in De Gea, hoping Morata can be used to lure the Spanish goalkeeper to the Bernabeu.
Regardless of the two aforementioned obstacles, Man United believe the deals can be completed before the weekend – they just need Woodward to step up and complete the transfers.
