Match facts

  • This will be the second meeting between Portugal and Mexico in the 2017 Confederations Cup.
  • Their previous clash ended 2-2, with El Tri scoring the equalizer shortly before the final whistle.
  • This will be only their fifth encounter.
  • Mexico are yet to win a single game vs Portugal (L2, D2).

Both Portugal and Mexico missed out on a spot in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup final – those went to Chile and Germany. Of the two third-place playoff teams, the Euro 2016 winners came close to progressing past the semis.

Cristiano and Co. battled it out with La Roja, in an intense tie. Even extra-time wasn’t enough to separate the two sides, as a penalty shootout was required. Claudio Bravo’s heroics handed heartbreak to the European giants in the last four.

Mexico suffered a worse fate in their clash with Germany. The odds were always against El Tri, but there remained hope. Nonetheless, Chicharito and Co. were ripped apart by the World Cup winners, losing 4-1 to die Mannschaft.

Although finishing in third will salvage some pride, Portugal will be without captain and star attacker Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid ace was allowed to leave the national side after their loss to Chile due to the birth of his twins.
