USMNT

The Stars and Stripes presently find themselves in a disappointing fourth spot. Whilst they're not out of the running to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the USMNT have quite a lot of work to do. A poor start to their campaign saw them lose to Mexico and shockingly embarassed by being trounced 4-0 by Costa Rica before they finally began to turn things around. In November, Jurgen Klinsmann made way for the return of Bruce Arena, who is now in his second spell with the team after a stint between 1998 and 2006.

Arena's arrival have seen an uptick in results, with the team cruising to a 6-0 victory over Honduras to pick up their first three points. But, having dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Panama, they will obviously need to improve - and fast - if they want to avoid going through the dreaded inter-contential play-off.

Here's how the standings look for the USMNT ahead of Thursday's fixture

Fortunately for the team, they will have Clint Dempsey back in action. The veteran forward missed quite a bit of action in 2016 due to illness, but has returned in full force and netted a hat-trick during the rout over Honduras. Considering he needs just one goal to tie Landon Donovan's all-time scoring record, expect him to be that much more motivated for this tie. Another key player for the team, of course, will be rising youngster Christian Pulisic, who also scored during the huge win against Honduras and is fresh off a solid campaign with Borussia Dortmund.

Trinidad & Tobago

As for Trinidad & Tobago, they are down - but not necessarily out. As one can see from the table, only two points divide third placed Panama from the bottom-placed side, and the visitors come into this game just one point behind the USMNT. The Soca Warriors, however, have a a frustrating record against their upcoming hosts. Out of their last 23 meetings, they have won just twice, and the last victory was on October 15, 2008, when they won 2-1 during a 2010 World Cup qualifying match.

So, with that in mind, it goes without saying that they will need something special to beat the Stars and Stripes, especially on home turf!
