The Belgian striker is Mourinho's top target, but Everton's high asking price has forced Jose to throw one of his own players into the deal.

Manchester United’s interest in Romelu Lukaku is serious; so much that the Red Devils are working on a player-plus-cash deal for this season’s Premier League top scorer, according to the Daily Mail.

The Toffees are not keen on cashing in on the Belgian ace, but the striker’s refusal to sign a contract extension at Goodison Park has forced his employer’s hands. Thus, Everton are demanding a huge £100m fee for the former Chelsea man.

Mourinho – the man who forced him out of Stamford Bride – has placed Lukaku at the top of his priority list, ahead of even Antoine Griezmann. The Special One is even ready to throw captain Wayne Rooney into the deal in order to lower the asking price.

The Red Devils value their legendary attacker at £17m, but the Three Lions ace could demand a pay-off for the two years remaining on his £250,000-per-week Man United contract.

The 31-year-old made a name for himself at Everton and could return back this summer, but Rooney will likely take a £100,000 pay cut. The Man United captain has accepted that this will be his last season at Old Trafford despite publicly denying the exit rumors.

If this player-plus-cash deal goes through, it will rid the Red Devils off their healthily-paid benchwarmer. In return, they would receive a player Mourinho identifies as the man to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Red Devils’ have struggled to score this season, and could miss out on the Champions League as a result – should they also lose the Europa League final. Lukaku could easily bring back the goals to the 20-time Premier League winners.
