The host nation -or nations- will be decided during FIFA's 2018 Congress to be celebrated in Russia, one day before the beginning of the tournament.

Despite Sunil Gulati's wishes to have CONCACAF's bid to host the 2026 World Cup approved, FIFA has decided to keep their options open for the bidding process that will elect the host nation of that competition.

In a press release issued earlier today, FIFA revealed that the process will go as planned, even if CONCACAF asked to speed it up to begin preparations as soon as possible.

"Based on specific regulations to be issued by the Council, the FIFA general secretariat shall establish a bidding procedure inviting initially the member associations of CONCACAF, CAF, CONMEBOL and the OFC to express their interest by 11 August 2017 to submit to FIFA a bid to host the final competition of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 68th FIFA Congress will decide on the selection of the candidate host associations," the press release states.

Mexico, Canada and the U.S. have already presented a joint bid to host the 2026 World Cup. Canada and Mexico would host 10 games each, while the remaining 60 would be played in the U.S., according to their initial proposition.
