An injury-ravaged Bayern welcome opponent keen on revenge
Bayern Munich
It's been a rough past few weeks for die Roten. Since cruising to a 4-1 win over Dortmund in Der Klassiker, Bayern have failed to win their past four games. That includes two defeats to Real Madrid in the Champions League and two draws in the league. Whilst the second-leg loss in Spain was under controversial circumstances and bad refereeing, the fact of the matter is, Bayern are not exactly feeling at their most confident right now.
Whilst the Bundesliga title is pretty much safe - given that RB Leipzig are eight points behind - Bayern certainly will hope to at least make it a domestic double by clinching the DFB Pokal. However, they could find it tough to book their spot in the final. Injuries have taken their toll on the team. Manuel Neuer suffered a fractured foot during their UCL clash with Real Madrid and is out for the rest of the season. And they are dealing with a major defensive crisis: David Alaba, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, and Javi Martinez are all struggling with injuries. Alaba was forced off early during the tie with Mainz and is highly unlikely to feature, whilst Martinez and Hummels will have to pass late fitness tests in order to see if they can play.
Borussia Dortmund
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund have had their fair share of inconsistency this term, and now are battling to secure a spot in the top three to guarantee themselves a Champions League berth. Along with Bayern, die Schwarzgelben are also out of the UCL, meaning that for the first time in over a decade, there are no Bundesliga sides in European competition. Dortmund, despite putting up a good fight, were no match for a high-flying Monaco and bowed out after two highly entertaining quarter-finals earlier this month.
Due to an unfortunate attack on the team's bus, defender Marc Bartra is out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery. Other absentees include Sokratis Papastathopoulos, as well as midfielder Nuri Şahin, but Marco Reus, who has struggled with injuries for the past few years has finally appeared to make a recovery and has returned to the fold. As they are a whopping 14 points behind Bayern, the DFB Pokal represents the only chance Dortmund have at clinching some silverware this season. Will they be able to get revenge for their 4-1 humiliation at the hands of the Bavarian titans and beat them in another edition of Der Klassiker later today?
