And the four-time Ballon d'Or winner wasn't the only Blancos star from the 3-2 Clasico defeat to be dropped.

Real Madrid, who appeared destined to win La Liga, are now fretting having lost the lead to rivals Barcelona. The league is still very much in Los Blancos’ hands, given that they have a game in hand, but Zidane’s men need to triumph in all of their remaining six games.

With that in mind, it will come as a huge shock that Zinedine Zidane has opted to leave out Cristiano Ronaldo of the squad for their trip to Deportivo La Coruna. The 32-year-old was the biggest absentee, but he wasn’t the only first-team player to miss out.

Toni Kroos was also given a breather for this midweek tie. The German ace and the Portuguese superstar were both mostly anonymous during the 3-2 loss to Barca, but Zizou most probably omitted them as a precautionary measure given that they host Valencia on Saturday.

However, Deportivo cannot be underestimated. Branquiazuis, at the very same venue as Wednesday’s clash with Real Madrid, beat Barca 2-1 in March.

Furthermore, the Champions League holders are already without Pepe and Bale, both of which are injured. Sergio Ramos also misses this game through suspension, having been sent off in El Clasico.
