Gianluigi Buffon made his debut for Italy 20 years ago, and he is on the verge of making history today.

Italian legendary goalkeeper Giangluigi Buffon is set to play his 1000th career game when the Azzurri take on Albania for their World Cup qualifier. At 39, the legendary shot-stopper hopes to play in the FIFA 2018 World Cup.

He started his career at Parma in 1995 and left in 2001 after making 168 appearances. He then joined Juventus the same year, and has since made 483 appearances for the Old Lady. At the national team level, he has played 167 times, taking the total to 999 career games.

And speaking ahead of the historic game, his former Azzurri teammate Francesco Totti told Italian TV:

"Best wishes Gigi, he's a great.

 "I must have scored 10-15 goals gainst him in my career, not only at Juve, also when he was at Parma."

In 2003, Buffon became the first goalkeeper to be named UEFA player of the Year. And in 2006, he emerged second in the race for the Ballon d'Or.
