Dortmund made an official announcement on the World Cup winner's health on Wednesday.

Mario Gotze’s season has just gone from bad to completely over. Borussia Dortmund made the official announcement on Wednesday, revealing that the German sadly won’t play again this season.

The World Cup winner’s already frustrating season took a turn for the worse when he was diagnosed with a metabolic disorder. As a result, the 24-year-old was withdrawn from training without no return date.

A series of muscular problems hampered his career since returning to the Signal Iduna Park. Gotze’s attempt to regain a spot in the starting eleven will have to wait longer, as he is not expected to play until the start of next season.

Dortmund confirmed that the German will undergo performance-based training during the summer. A return to the first-team will have to wait until after the 2017/18 kick-off.

This timeline, however, depends on Gotze responding well to treatment. Luckily, the playmaker had "spoken positively" about his recovery plan.

CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke spoke about the once promising youngster, praying to have him back fit as early as possible. He said: "BVB, also on behalf of his tens of millions of fans, would like to wish Mario Götze a speedy recovery.”
