Match Facts & Stats

  • Egypt, with seven titles, are the most decorated side at AFCON tournaments
  • However, the Pharaohs have not featured here since winning it in 2010
  • They are still the only side to have won three consecutive titles - between 2006 and 2010
  • Burkina Faso have never beaten Egypt in six prior attempts (two draws, four defeats)
  • Les Étalons best finish at an AFCON tournament was finishing as runners-up in 2013
  • Egypt's win over Morocco in this year's quarter-finals was their first in over three decades (since 1986)
  • Prior to that they had lost four and drawn eight of their prior 12 meetings with their North African rivals
  • Egypt have gone 23 AFCON games without defeat (W18 D5), last losing in the 2004 tournament (v Algeria)
  • The Pharaohs were the only side to keep a clean sheet in all three group stages

A coveted spot in the finals beckons: Will it be Burkina Faso or Egypt playing there?

Burkina Faso

How they got here: Les Étalons secured their spot at this juncture by drawing both Gabon and Cameroon 1-1, and then defeated debutants Guinea Bissau 2-0. That was enough for them to finish top of their group and set up a clash with Tunisia in the quarter-finals. It appeared that that game was heading for extra time and possibly spot-kicks, until coach Paulo Duarte decided to make a few key changes that changed the tide of the match.

Aristide Bance, who is regarded as a sort of cult hero in his native country, proved the true meaning of "impact sub" when he scored his team's first after being on the pitch for less than five minutes. Bance's excellent effort was followed up by another from Prejuce Nakoulma after a brilliant counter-attacking effort that effectively sealed the win for Les Étalons.

However, their next foe is none other than Egypt. And whilst Burkina Faso have been quite solid, the Pharaohs boast one of the strongest defensive sides so far at AFCON - whilst being led by a shot-stopper who made history at this tournament.

Egypt

How they got here: Egypt, who are back in the competition for the first time since winning it in 2010, booked their spot in the knock-out phases by drawing Mali 0-0, and beating both Uganda and Ghana 1-0. They then overcame their long standing hoodoo against Morocco by grinding out another tough 1-0 result.

At 44, goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary is the eldest ever player to feature at an AFCON tournament, and made history when he came on as a substitute against Mali. In his 26 games played at this competition, he has managed to keep 14 clean sheets whilst clinching three titles along the way. So far, they are the only side yet to concede a goal in this competition, but have been dealt a major blow as Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny may not be fit enough to take part in this crunch clash.
