Honduras’ fate is in Costa Rica’s hands. On Wednesday, the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying campaign will enter its final step and it is only then that Honduras’ destiny will be revealed.

Los Catrachos will play El Salvador away in San Salvador and only a victory will give them the chance to claim the third spot in the unique group.

Table description, Honduras’ position

At the top of the table, the United States and Mexico have booked their tickets for the finals of the World Cup next summer.

At the foot of the standings, it is definitely all over for both Trinidad & Tobago and El Salvador. Meanwhile, the battle in the middle of the table between Costa Rica and Honduras is all about avoiding the play-offs and qualifying automatically for the World Cup.

Honduras are locked on 13 points and two defeats on the trot have moved them onto fourth in the table with two points behind Costa Rica.

In the last match-day of the campaign, Costa Rica face the United States whereas Honduras clash against El Salvador. Los Catrachos arguably have a less difficult game than the Costa Ricans; Whereas Honduras’ upcoming opponents lost 4-1 to Mexico last Saturday, Costa Rica’s next adversaries triumphed 3-2 over Los Catrachos.

Thus, there is a huge prospect that Honduras will qualify automatically for the finals of the World Cup at the very last moment.

Carlos Pavon’s perfect moment for redemption

The playmaker dramatically contributed to Honduras’ defeat against the USA last Saturday when he missed his penalty ten minutes from time.

Honduras would have secured at least a point if Pavon had converted his spot kick. But things didn’t unfold this way and Los Catrachos stumbled for yet another time.

On Wednesday, Carlos Pavon would be keen to redeem himself by firing Honduras to the World Cup finals perhaps.

In the first leg of this encounter, Pavon was the match hero as he scored a goal just before a quarter of an hour.

The striker will hope to repeat such an achievement on Wednesday when his side travels to El Salvador.

It surely will not be an easy game and though El Salvador are disqualified, they’ll still aim to pose problems to the visitors.
