  • Liverpool have won three of their last four home League Cup games versus the Saints
  • The Saints have won their last three away League Cup games againt Premier League sides
  • Jurgen Klopp's men have not lost back-to-back League Cup games since 2005
  • The reds have only failed to score in four of their last 53 home games in the League Cup

Team news

Defender Joel Matip has been cleared to play. He could start for the reds after refusing to feature for Cameroon at the African Cup of Nations.

Jack Stephens and Josh Sims are expected to start. The latter recently signed a three-year deal at St. Mary's. However, key defender Virgil van Dijk could miss the clash due to an ankle injury.

Match forecast

Despite having a 1-0 advantage here, Claude Puel's men are slightly disadvantaged thanks to the absence of van Dijk. The Saints have won three of their last four matches in all competitions but all those wins came at home.

And thanks to the hostile atmosphere at Anfield, this could be a difficult outing for the red and whites. But they could also fight their way to the final if Liverpool's most recent form is anything to go by.

Klopp's men have only won one of their last games in all competitions, and they recently suffered their first defeat at Anfield in more than a year when they went down 3-2 to Swansea last weekend. Just a little bit of confidence is what the St. Mary's outfit need to book a ticket to the final.
