Ghana seeking revenge for World Cup qualifying loss

Ghana

With six points, the Black Stars are currently on top of their group. They have also booked their spot in the quarter-finals, meaning that win, lose, or draw, Avram Grant's men are through to the next stage. However, Ghana, who finished as runners-up at the last edition of this tournament, have not been very impressive. They needed a spot-kick to get past Uganda, and even after going 1-0 up, did not seem interested to press ahead to try to grab a second goal.

And whilst skipper Asamoah Gyan's powerful header was enough to get the job done against Mali, again, the Black Stars appeared far from dominant and confident in that fixture. Key defender Baba Rahman will miss this game - and the rest of Ghana's tournament - after suffering a bad knee injury during their tie with Uganda.

Overall, Ghana's showings not the kind of performances fans want to see, especially after their awful display at the 2014 World Cup and struggles so far in 2018 World Cup qualifiers. In fact, at this juncture, Ghana are looking highly likely to miss out on the upcoming event in Russia, and so beating Egypt on Wednesday would be exactly the kind of psychological boost the team need ahead of taking them on in November of this year.

Egypt

Meanwhile, Egypt come into this game on four points. The Pharaohs have not been dominant so far in what has been a rather subdued campaign for Hector Cuper's side. A 0-0 draw against Mali was followed up by a scrappy 1-0 win over Uganda, but they are in good position to secure their spot in the next round. And in terms of World Cup qualifiers, Egypt are nicely poised to feature at the upcoming big event in Russia in less than two years' time.

With stars like Roma's Mohamed Salah and Arsenal's Mohamed Elneny in their ranks, many are expecting Egypt to make a splash at this tournament. The Pharaohs need just one point to secure passage to the next round, but surely will be looking for more than that as they hope to finally get their AFCON tournament really up and running.
