Match Facts & Stats

  • Ghana's last AFCON triumph was back in 1982
  • This will be the second AFCON meeting between the Black Stars and Uganda
  • The only previous Cup of Nations game between the Ghana and the Cranes was during the 1978 final which hosts Ghana won 2-0 in Accra thanks to a brace from Opoku Afriyie
  • That, to date, was Uganda's best ever result from an AFCON tournament
  • Ghana are ranked 54th, whilst Uganda are ranked 73rd

Familar foes meet yet again in rematch of 1978 final

Interestingly, this will be the first AFCON meeting between Ghana and Uganda in nearly 40 years. The last time the two sides faced off at this tournament was during the 1978 final, which ultimately was won by Ghana to make it their third AFCON title. Uganda are currently coached by Serbian tactician Milutin "Micho" Sredojevic, and has already faced the Black Stars three times.

He's yet to lose. So far, under his leadership, the Cranes have earned two draws and a win against Ghana. That includes a scoreless stalemate during World Cup qualifiers at the end of last year. In fact, as things stand right now, Ghana could be in danger of actually missing out on the 2018 World Cup in a quartet that also includes Congo and Egypt. Uganda, by contrast, sit in second, just two points behind the Pharaohs. However, Sredojevic will have to make do without key players Khalid Aucho and Murushid Jjuuko due to suspension.

Meanwhile, Ghana will be again trying to get their hands on the AFCON title. The Black Stars have won this trophy four times, but their last triumph was way back in 1982, which is before many of the players and many fans who will be watching the team were even born. In 2015, they came close, but ultimately came up short as they fell to the Ivory Coast on spot-kicks.

Egypt hoping to re-establish themselves as giants of African football

No other side has won more - or participated in more AFCON tournaments - than Egypt. However, the team went through a rough period after clinching seventh title in 2010 and now will be looking to re-establish themselves as Africa's premier side. Mohamed Salah has been in good form for Roma over in Italy, and fans will be hoping to see that same kind of performance replicated for his national side.

As for Mali, they no longer have the reliable Seydou Keita in the middle of the park, as he retired from international duty recently. They're currently coached by Alain Giresse, who led them to third spot back in 2012, and will be hoping to have him work his magic yet again. However, they have a tough task ahead of them. Group D can certainly make claim to be this tournament's "Group of Death", and as such, the Eagles will do their best to try to frustrate Egypt as every point makes the difference between qualification and an early trip back home.
