Match Facts & Stats

  • Gabon are ranked 108th as per FIFA, whilst Guinea-Bissau are ranked 68th
  • The Panthers are making their seventh AFCON appearance
  • Their best ever performance to date was the quarter-finals in 1996 and 2012
  • Guinea-Bissau have never featured at an AFCON tournament
  • The Djurtus are ranked 68th as per FIFA
  • This will be the first ever meeting of any kind (competitive or friendly) between Gabon and Guinea-Bissau

Both sides hoping to start off well despite off-the-pitch problems

Although Guinea-Bissau are indeed an ambitious side - they finished top of their group - they have never featured at any kind of international tournament. Ever. That includes the World Cup as well. As such, they are widely viewed as among the weaker sides at this upcoming AFCON tournament. Still, they did shock the continent by qualifying for the tournament in the first place. However, the Djurtus were dealing with some major off-the-pitch issues; namely with players going on striker due to a delay in receiving their wages.

Unfortunately, that appears to be a fact of life for many players in Africa. Reportedly, several Gabonese teams staged a boycott due to, again, not receiving their wages on time. In any case, all eyes for Gabon, of course, will be on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Although he wasn't able to defend his African Player of the Year award, the Borussia Dortmund ace is currently the top goal-scorer in the Bundesliga and enjoys a three goal advantage over the next challenge. In fact, he's a definite contender to become the first African player in two decades to be the top marksman in Germany's top flight, but for now, his focus will be to lead the Panthers out of their group and as deep into AFCON 2017 as possible.

Gabon, to date, of course, have never won an AFCON title and will be hoping that their hope pitch advantage will help them make a splash this month.
