Ajax is back in the Dutch title race. The ‘Godenzonen’ grabbed a non-convincing 2-0 win at VVV-Venlo on Sunday, thus taking advantage of PSV’s Friday loss at NAC Breda. PSV and FC Twente are on top of the table with a three point gap to Ajax.

FC Twente bounced back after two consecutive league losses with a 4-2 away win against NEC on Saturday. NEC were a tough nut to crack for the title holders, who were kicked out of the Champions League due to their 1-0 defeat at Internazionale on Wednesday. Their win in Nijmegen put them alongside PSV at the top of the table.

NAC Breda managed to beat the league leaders in the Eredivisie for the second time in two weeks on Friday when they set aside PSV (4-2) on Friday. NAC remained undefeated at home against PSV for the fifth consecutive season. Only one club (Willem II) managed to set a longer unbeaten home streak (8) against PSV in Eredivisie history.

NAC Breda managed to beat the league leaders in the Eredivisie for the second time in two weeks on Friday when they set aside PSV (4-2) on Friday. Two weeks ago NAC left FC Twente empty handed in Breda. The home team ended the match with ten, because of a Kees Luijckx red card.

Matthew Amoah was the big man scoring twice. PSV seemed to be in control after Jonathan Reis scored 1-0 from an Ola Toivonen assist in the 15th minute. At the half hour mark a Toivonen mistake gave away the equalizer. The Swede easily gave away the ball in midfield. Amoah broke through and handed Leonardo simple chance.

When Balázs Dzsudzsák put in the 2-1 three minutes later PSV seemed to be back in the driver’s seat, but Amoah equalized in the 41st minute and after the break NAC took control despite the Luijckx red card. Ali Boussaboun put the ten man home team in front in the 50th minute and Amoah finished PSV off in the 79th minute.

NAC remained undefeated at home against PSV for the fifth consecutive season. Only one club managed to set a longer unbeaten home streak against PSV in Eredivisie history. Willem II did not lose at home versus PSV in eight consecutive matches between 1996 and 2004.

AZ won their last two Eredivisie matches against FC Twente and Ajax, but sc Heerenveen were not impressed on Saturday. The visitors started poorly, but fought back and almost grabbed three points in Alkmaar. Thanks to a 90th minute goal by Kolbeinn Sigthórsson AZ managed to avoid a home defeat.

Manager Gertjan Verbeek was disappointed despite earning a late draw. “Scoring in the last minute is a bit lucky of course, but still I’m not satisfied at all. We were 1-0 up but after the break we played very bad.”

Pontus Wernbloom put the home team 1-0 up in the seventh minute, bit in the second half Mika Väyrynen (53') and Daryl Janmaat (81') put Heerenveen in the driver’s seat. “It’s a pity we don’t get three points, but I have got a good feeling about the way we recovered after a poor first half”, Heerenveen coach Ron Jans said.

Arnaud Sutchuin Djoum handed Roda JC a 1-0 win against FC Groningen on Saturday. The Belgian striker scored the only goal of the match in the 40th minute. Roda are on a twelve match non-losing streak in the Eredivisie, their longest non-losing streak at home since 1996.

Roda coukld have finished FC Groningen off in the first half, but the home team missed a couple of good opportunities to score. In the second half FC Groningen regrouped and put pressure on the Roda defense. Tim Matavz, Tim Sparv and Danny Holla were not able to get the ball passed the outstanding Roda goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton.

FC Groningen may lose their third place on the table. Ajax can pass them if the Amsterdam team grab an away win at VVV Venlo.

Willem II took their third point of the season when they drew 1-1 at home against Excelsior on Saturday. Evgeniy Levchenko shot home the equalizer in the 89th minute after Kaj Ramsteijn put the visitors 1-0 up in the 51st minute.

Both relegation candidates worked hard, but could not display a decent game of football in Tilburg. The home crowd who sent an open letter to the team demanding “Blood, sweat and goals”, were very supportive. They also wrote “We will never desert you”, and remained cheering for their team even when they were 1-0 down.

Willem II’s draw gave the bottom team their first point at home since a 3-1 win against Sparta Rotterdam on 14 March 2010.

Twente got themselves into trouble when they forgot to mark Bas Sibum in the ninth minute. The former Twente midfielder easily scored after a free kick by John Goossens. Bryan Ruiz equalized in the 18th minute, but Twente who played without the suspended Douglas and Theo Janssen, could not impress in the first half in The Goffert.

NEC gave the match away in five minutes. Lasse Schöne wanted to do something fancy under pressure in his own box, but failed and lost the ball to Nacer Chadli, who handed Marc Janko a one hundred percent chance to score: 2-1 (40’). Four minutes later Rens van Eijden caused a penalty when he fouled Luuk de Jong with a late tackle. Bryan Ruiz converted the spot kick.

In the second half Björn Vleminckx (74’) scored 3-2 for the home team, but Marc Janko immediately answered with the 4-2 five minutes later. Vleminckx took the sole lead on the Eredivisie top scorer table with his 12th goal from 16 matches. Mounir El Hamdaoui (Ajax) and Ricky van Wolfswinkel (FC Utrecht) are on 11 goals from 15 matches.

Vitesse took their first loss of points with coach Albert Ferrer on the bench when they drew 1-1 on Sunday at De Graafschap. The home team had many chances to hurt their neighbors, but they failed to score more than one goal.

Youssouf Hersi (23’) put the home team in front, scoring for the fifth time against his former employer Vitesse. Wiljan Pluim equalizedfour minutes later, thus equalizing for the third time this season.

“Nothing is eqasy for us this season”, Mario Been said after the 2-1 home win against ADO Den Haag. “But we battled today and we showed that we have enough capacities to get away from the relegation zone.” It was Feyenoord’s first win in November and the club thus concluded a dramatic month on a high note.

Dmitri Bulykin put ADO up in ‘De Kuip’, scoring his 10th goal of the season. The visitors, who were on a three match not losing streak, played well in the first half, but after the half time break they were blown away by the passionate home team.

Feyenoord got a lucky equalizer when Aleksander Radosavljevic headed in his own goal in the 46th minute. After the goal Feyenoord overpowered ADO. Luc Castaignos put away the 2-1 from a Karim El Ahmadi assist. Feyenoord had more chances, but they lacked a target man. Been wants to add Jhonny van Beukering to his squad. The 27-year-old striker, who is transfer free because NEC did not renew his contract last summer, worked with the Feyenoord coach in Nijmegen before.

FC Utrecht missed a penalty, score dan own goal and gave away another spot kick in Almelo on Sunday. No wonder they lost. Heracles Almelo took advantage of their blundering visitors: 2-1.

Utrecht started well, but after Ricky van Wolfswinkel’s missed penalty the home team took over. Alje Schut headed the ball behind his own goalkeeper Michel Vorm in the 55th minute. When Tim Cornelisse shot home the 1-1 the match seemed to be equal, but Willy Overtoom coverted a penalty after Cornelisse fouled Everton in the box in the 84th minute.

Mido scored Ajax’ first goal in the 62nd minute against VVV-Venlo on Sunday. The Egyptian striker is much criticized in Amsterdam, but coach Martin Jol kept faith. With Luis Suarez suspended for seven matches Mido took his chance and after he scored the striker ran up to Jol to celebrate together.

With the goal Mido ended Ajax’ 340 minute goal draught. The ‘godenzonen’ only had two longer spans without scoring in Eredivisie history. Jol was satisfied with his team’s display in the second half. “We played with four attacking players, which can be dangerous bit today it turned out well.”

Araz Ozbiliz was one of those attacking players. The 20-year-old winger made his debut for Ajax. Miralem Sulejmani shot home the 2-0 after a beautiful one-two with Mounir El Hamdaoui.
