Premier League's Boxing Day records

Records: A look at Boxing Day's best EPL striker, manager, and club

December 26, 2016 By Ali M.
The best and worst December 26 awards feature the likes of Jose Mourinho and Claudio Ranieri.

Boxing Day is upon us, the time in the English Premier League when several – or all – clubs are in action the day after Christmas. This time around, though, only eight fixtures will be played.

Four out of the six top teams – Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, and Man United – will be in action on Monday, whilst the Liverpool will play on Tuesday. Tottenham have to wait until Wednesday to hit the field in a clash with Everton.

Here are some of the best Boxing Day records.

Most goals

The active Premier League player with the most goals on Boxing Day is Jermain Defoe. The Sunderland ace, having scored most of his goals with Tottenham, has found the back of the net six times.

However, four players have more Boxing Day goals than the Englishman. On top of that list is Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, with nine strikes. He’s followed by Alan Shearer and Robbie Keane, both eight, and Thierry Henry (7).

Most wins

The answer is, obviously, Manchester United. Being England’s most successful club, it’s only right that they have the best Boxing Day record. The Red Devils have won 18 out of 22 Premier League fixtures on December 26.

Worst club

This is a sad accolade, and it goes to West Brom. Having played 10 times on Boxing Day, the Baggies have recorded a single win.

Highest winning percentage for a manager

Again, only players, managers, and clubs that are still in the Premier League are taken into consideration. As a result, the most successful Boxing Day boss is Jose Mourinho. It looks like a win on Monday is inevitable for the Red Devils.

The worst current manager, with 0 wins out of 5, is…

Claudio Ranieri, Manchester United, Leicester, English Premier League

Highest scoring clubs

Man United: 57

Liverpool: 36

Tottenham: 36

Chelsea: 35

Arsenal: 33

Man City: 31
