Man United were close on signing a top European player under David Moyes's reign.

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes has opened up for the umpteenth time since partying ways with the Red Devils three seasons ago. The Scottish manager was earmarked by former Man Utd legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson as his sucessor in 2013, but it seems SAF's shoes were too huge for the ex-Everton boss.

The unwanted manager had great plans for the Red Devils, so he says. In an interview with the BBC, the Sunderland manager revealed that he was on the verge of signing Real Madrid star foward Gareth Bale for the Old Trafford outfit. Bale has been a long-term transfer target for the 20-time Premier League champions, but it has always been a game of cat and mouse between the English giants and his agent as far as the rumored transfer is concerned. The 53-year-old told BBC:

"When I first went in my real target was Gareth Bale. I felt all along that Gareth Bale was a Manchester United player."I fought right until the last minute. We actually offered a bigger deal than Real Madrid. But Gareth had his mind made up on going to Real Madrid."

But despite failling to land the Welshman, Moyes successfuly brought in Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini from Everton. Mata has been on fire for the Red Devils since his arrival, while Fellaini has been hugely dissappointing.
