Things took an ugly turn after the 30th-minute mark, when Gündogan asked the team's doctors to take a closer look at his knee. The player returned to the pitch to see if he could carry on playing, but he later ceased and accepted his fate.
Gündogan has been quite unlucky with injuries, as he missed the 2014 World Cup with Germany and the 2016 UEFA Euro.
His gestures indicate there's something really bad going on for the German midfielder.
Pep Guardiola tried to provide some comfort as Gündogan walked away from the pitch and straight into the team's locker room.
Here's what Guardiola stated following Manchester City's 2-0 win.
