Match facts

  • This will be the 65th match between these teams since 1979. Bayer Leverkusen has won 29 of those games, losing 16 and drawing 19 times.

  • Bayer Leverkusen has won three of the last four games against Schalke 04.

  • Schalke's last win against Leverkusen happened almost three years ago.

Team news

The Royal Blues will enter this match following their shocking loss against RB Leipzig last week. Added to their domestic woes, Markus Weinzierl's men lost their UEL tie against Salzburg, ending their unbeaten run in the competition.

For Sunday's clash, Weinzierl will have to deal with three injury absences: Coke, Embolo and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Added to those names, Benedikt Höwedes will have to sit this one out due to a ban.

The away team has a few worries of its own. With such a sloppy performance this season, Roger Schmidt's men have racked up the least amount of points for Die Werkself in almost a decade. The absences of Admir Mehmedi, Kevin Volland and Kevin Kampl will damage the team's tactics, especially if they want to end their current three-game streak without a win in the domestic tournament.

The team's all-time top scorer, Stefan Kiessling, will try to celebrate a special personal milestone.
