Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders: Which team will clinch their first ever MLS Cup?

Toronto FC

Toronto FC have truly been a side to watch over the course of competition. Greg Vanney's men, who sit in fifth spot in the league table, cruised to a 7-0 aggregate win over NYC FC to set up a historic all-Canadian derby against Montreal Impact. In the first leg, they went 3-0 down. Normally, that means game over - unless if one recalls Liverpool's impressive comeback against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final.

The Reds may not have been able to level the scores, but two late goals from American duo Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore saw the first leg finish 3-2. With the tie poised on a knife's edge, they took on Montreal in arguably the most entertaining game in the MLS Cup's history. By the time the dust had settled, Toronto had come out on top 5-2 thanks to two extra-time goals to ultimately win the series 7-5.

And now, the hosts are on the cusp of winning their first ever MLS Cup. They come into this game with a full-strength squad, but one player many will have their eyes on is Sebastian Giovinco. The Italian international has made a name for himself in MLS, but the ex-Juventus man has been unusually quiet so far after netting a hat-trick during the two-legged win over NYC FC. Fans, naturally, will be hoping to see him a lot more involved in tonight's match.

Seattle Sounders

The visitors initially had a pretty rough start to the season. First, veteran striker Clint Dempsey was rulled out for the rest of the campaign due to an unfortunate heart issue. And then, long-time coach Sigi Schmid was sacked after a series of bad performances. This was especially notable as the German tactician had been in charge of the club ever since its inception, and so there was a great deal of concern how the team would fare with a new man in charge.

Schmid's assistant, Brian Schmetzer was named in his stead, initially as the interim coach, and then as the permanent boss starting from November 2nd. Arguably, the biggest game-changer for the team has been mid-season signing Nicolas Lodeiro, who won the coveted MLS Newcomer of the Year despite only featuring in less than 20 games. The Uruguayan international has scored six goals in 15 appearances across all comps and has been highly instrumental in the team's run all the way to this juncture.
