The inaugural The Best FIFA award welcomes a new prize: the Fan Award. The world’s governing body has now announced the four nominees, and it consists of expected entries.
Chosen by a panel consisting of Zvonimir Boban, Marta, Gabriel Batistuta, and Vladimir Petkovic; Iceland fans are one of the expected inclusions. Supporters of Strákarnir okkar won over the world’s hearts during Euro 2016 in the summer.
Heimir Hallgrímsson’s boys entered the competition as favorites for a group stage exit, but shocked the entire continent by making it all the way to the quarter-final. At the heart of their impressive run were their fans and the iconic Thunder Viking Clap celebration.
Also on the list are Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, two European clubs known for having energetic home fans even when the results aren’t going their way. Anfield and the Signal Iduna Park are known for the vibrant atmosphere. Furthermore, the two fans joined together to sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in an unforgettable 27th anniversary tribute to the Hillsborough disaster.
Last on the list are ADO Den Haag supporters. You may not have heard of the club, but their supporters made the headlines for throwing stuffed toys at Feyenoord’s fans instead of the usual bottles and flares. The supporters who received the toys were from Rotterdam’s Sophia Children’s Hospital.
