FIFA President Giannin Infantino has promoted the idea of having more teams playing the global tournament, but his latest idea seems a bit odd, to say the least.

Plans to make the FIFA World Cup a 48-team tournament seem to be underway, as FIFA President Gianni Infantino will present a document in the upcoming FIFA Congress in Zurich to extend the competition from 32 to 48 National Teams.

A source told AFP that Infantino will propose a 16-group format, with three teams included in each group. The source also claims that two teams would make it to the knockout stage, adding a Round of 32 to the one-match stage.

In fact, FIFA's top exec has added that, with this format, the cost of putting together a World Cup would be more accesible, as it would require two countries to host the tournament.

"We don't want 'white elephants', we want that all stadiums serve a purpose for the countries they're in," Infantino has stated.

The decision about expanding the world's most relevant football tournament could be taken on January 9, during FIFA's next congress.
