Match facts and other historical stats

  • PSG have won 19 out of their last 27 group games since returning to the Champions League in 2012 (whilst losing four and drawing the other four)
  • Edinson Cavani is just one of two players to have netted on every single matchday of this season's Champions League. The other player? Borussia Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
  • Basel are winless in their past seven Champions League matches (three draws, four losses) and have yet to keep a clean sheet during that period
  • However, they are unbeaten at home in their past seven games
  • Basel's record against Ligue 1 sides stands as W4-D4-L4 (at home it's W4-D2-L1)
  • Their sole loss to French sides at home was to Strasbourg (2-0 during the 2005/2006 Europa League)

Edinson Cavani to add more to his Champions League goal-haul?

Basel

Simply put, it's win or bust for Basel. With just one point from their first three games, the RotBlau are facing an exit from Europe's premier club competition. Of course, when the quartet was announced, not many gave Urs Fischer's side much of a shot at qualifying due to the presence of stronger teams like PSG and Arsenal. That being said, there is still a chance at featuring in continental football if they pip bottom-feeders Ludogorets to third spot in their group.

However, their frustrating run is a major source of concern. Despite being unbeaten at home in their past seven matches across all comps, Basel have not won their last septet of Champions League fixture. Furthermore, they have yet to keep a clean sheet, and their problems are not just defensive: they have scored just one goal so far. Perhaps encouraging is the fact that the hosts have conceded just six goals in their last ten Champions League games played at home, but they will need to do more than play defense to have any chance of salvaging their Champions League campaign.

PSG

With four goals, Edinson Cavani is only second to Lionel Messi in terms of output in this season's Champions League. However, the Uruguayan has scored in every single European tie so far and is only one of two players to have achieved this (the other being Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang). Tied on seven points with Arsenal, Les Parisiens have one foot already in the round of 16. All they need to do is make sure they win and hope that the Gunners don't manage to lose in their game (something that really would be the shock of this tournament if that actually happened).

Despite faring decently, PSG and new coach Unai Emery are not without their critics. They are six points behind league leaders Nice and have not been taking Ligue 1 with the same kind of verve that saw them stroll to a fourth consecutive title. Furthermore, having failed to clear the quarter-finals in this tournament in the past few seasons, Les Parisiens' wealthy owners will be hoping to see them take that additional step further. Of course, first up will be to book their spot in the round of 16, and that is something they certainly are on course to do on Tuesday evening.

In terms of personnel, PSG will be missing only controversial defender Serge Aurier, and Javier Pastore, who returned to training, will have to be evaluated to determine if he can participate following a long absence due to a calf problem.
