Team news

Syria

To date, Syria have never qualified for a World Cup. In 2014, they were disqualified due to deploying an ineligible player, and they will arrive in Malaysia having suffered a 1-0 reversal to Uzbekistan. Given the dire situation in their country, the team do not play any of their games on home turf, and this match in fact was initially scheduled to take place in Macau. However, due to a failure to come to an agreement, the match was instead moved to Malaysia, and the Qasioun Eagles will hope to rebound from their defeat as they take on one of Asia's strongest teams on Tuesday.

South Korea

South Korea will be coming into this game having secured a tough win over China. The Taegeuk Warriors were in cruise control for much of the match and had moved into a 3-0 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining. As such, for all intents and purposes, it appeared that all three points were in the bag for Uli Stielike's men. That is, until China gave them quite a fright with two very late goals, setting up the stage for a roller-coaster ride finish that certainly would have kept viewers entertained in the last moments of the match.

Still, it was enough to earn a win, and now, the team will have to regroup and refocus in order to maintain their good standing record against Syria. The team, also nicknamed the Red Devils, have had a solid 2016, with just one loss - a 6-1 humiliation to Spain - in their past five matches.
