The celebrated forward scored Argentina’s only goal of the match as they piped Uruguay 1-0 in Mendoza, a result that catapulted them to the top their World Cup qualifying group.
This was the 29-year-old’s first appearance for Albiceleste since their second consecutive Copa America defeat in the finals against Chile. The Barcelona ace had announced his retirement from international football after losing three finals with the national team in as many years, but later decided to revoke his decision thanks to fan pressure. He then put up a man of the match performance against Uruguay on his return, scoring a brilliant goal from outside the box after a perfect ball control that saw him beat two defenders. Reports in Argentina now suggest that the legendary footballer has a groin injury, which he had been nursing prior to the match against Uruguay. He told reporters:
"My groin is hurting a lot, from before this match.
"We'll see [if I'll be fit.] I always want to be [in the team] but there are also a lot of important matches coming up."
The Copa America Centenario finalists travel to the Estadio Metrolpolitano de Merida in Venezuela to face the host country in their next World Cup qualifier fixture. The match will be played on September 6, 2016.
