Die Mannschaft have a new captain.

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is the new captain of the German national football team. The 30-year-old takes the captain’s armband with immediate effect and is expected to lead his country against Norway on Sunday. 

Bastian had an emotional final match for the World Champions on Wednesday against Finland. He played for 68th minutes before leaving the field as he received a standing ovation. Watch the emotional moment below:

The 32-year-old made his debut for Germany in 2004 and has since played 121 matches for his country and scored 24 goals. He won the FIFA World Cup as Germany captain in 2014, and steered them to third place finish in the 2006 and 2010 editions of the global football competition. He also steered Germany to third-place finish in the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2005 and runner-up in the UEFA European Football Championship in 2008.

Neuer, on the other hand, made his debut for Germany in 2009 and has since made 79 appearances for the senior team. He won the World Cup in 2014 in Brazil and the UEFA European U21 Football Championship in 2009.
