AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma began grabbing attention during the 2015/16 season, so much that we profiled his rise to fame by comparing him to some of Europe’s biggest custodians.
The Italian shot-stopper continued to impress for the Rossoneri, thus earning himself a call-up to the national side for the upcoming international break.
Giampiero Ventura will take over the Azzurri for his first game on September 1 against France, and has decided on bringing the AC Milan starlet for the Stadio San Nicola affair.
As a result, Donnarumma – aged 17 years and six months – has become the youngest player in the Italian national side’s history to receive a call-up since 1911. Rodolfo Gavinelli (16 years, 3 months and 8 days) and Renzo De Vecchi (16 years, 3 months and 23 days) are two younger players to have received call-ups.
To put Donnarumma’s call-up into perspective, he was named in Italy’s squad alongside captain and legend Gianluigi Buffon. The Juventus icon made his debut for the national side in October 1997, more than one year before the Milan goalkeeper was even born.\
