Team news

Bayern Munich

A new season has brought in a new coach for Bayern Munich, with Pep Guardiola being replaced by the highly decorated Carlo Ancelotti earlier this summer. The Italian tactician has already picked up his first piece of silverware after guiding die Roten to a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the DFL-Supercup earlier this month, and fans will be hoping that this is the beginning of more to come this season.

Whilst new signing Mats Hummels - who made his debut for Bayern against former club Dortmund last weekend - will feature, Renato Sanches is still recovering from an injury, so if he does play, it will be coming off the bench. Other absentees for this game include Douglas Costa, Arjen Robben, Jerome Boateng, Holger Badstuber, and Kingsley Coman. Nonetheless, Friday's hosts are expected to pick up their first win of the new campaign without much fuss - especially considering the shape Werder Bremen will be in when they arrive at the Allianz Arena.

Werder Bremen

As for Werder Bremen, an injury crisis could not come at a worse possible time. Viktor Skripnik's side, who finished in 13th last season, will not be able to count on Justin Eilers, Max Kruse, Claudio Pizarro, Michael Zetterer, Santiago García, Melvyn Lorenzen, Milos Veljkovic, and Philipp Bargfrede all due to a slew of varying injury problems. To complicate matters further, they will be coming into this game having suffered a disappointing 2-1 reversal in DFB-Pokal action against lower-tier side Sportfreunde Lotte.

Unfortunately for the visitors, their season opener sees them taking on none other than Bayern Munich, a team that they have not beaten in nearly eight years. And for all intents and purposes, this bad track record, coupled with their decimated squad means that Werder Bremen's misery against the Bavarian giants looks set to continue this Friday.

Broadcast info - Borussia Dortmund vs. Mainz

Who's playing: For the fifth straight season, Borussia Dortmund will again try to knock Bayern Munich off their title perch. Die Schwarzgelben had an excellent campaign last term and will kick-start this one with an interesting clash against Mainz at home on Saturday.

What time: Saturday, August 27th at 06:30 PST/09:30 EST/13:30 UTC/14:30 BST/15:30 CET

What stadium: Borussia Dortmund's home ground, the famous Signal Iduna Park will be the venue for this match. Also known as the Westfalenstadion, it's the largest stadium in Germany and has a maximum capacity of 81,359 for league games (65,829 for international matches).

Match facts and other historical stats - Borussia Dortmund vs. Mainz

  • Borussia Dortmund have scored at least two goals in 19 out of their last 21 home matches
  • Die Schwarzgelben have won their last four home games against Mainz (in all competitions)
  • Die Nullfünfer last defeated BVB on September 20, 2014. They have never beaten them at Signal Iduna Park.

Team news

Borussia Dortmund

Normally, earning 78 points is enough to win the league. Just as scoring 25 goals is sufficient to win the top goal-scorer prize (with the exception of La Liga, of course). Unfortunately, for Borussia Dortmund, 78 points earned them a runners-up spot, which set the record for the most points ever earned by a second-placed team. And regrettably, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's 25 goals were not enough to help him pick up the coveted Torjägerkanone, which went to Bayern's Robert Lewandowski.

However, a new season beckons, and with it comes new opportunities. Borussia Dortmund will be coming into this match having picked up a handful of 3-0 wins (two in club friendlies, and one in the DFB-Pokal), but will nonetheless be a bit disappointed they couldn't get the better of Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup earlier a few weeks ago.

Mainz

As for Mainz, they finished in a solid sixth spot last season and Martin Schmidt's side will naturally be hoping to further improve this season. To date, that has been their best ever result since the 2010/2011 term. Interestingly enough, die Nullfünfer are a side very familiar to current Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel, who coached them from 2009 to 2014, and they will be hoping to pick up their first win against Dortmund since 2014.
