Match facts and other historical stats - Brazil vs. Canada

  • Canada have never won on Brazilian soil (three losses, three draws)
  • This is the 20th meeting betwen these two sides, and the head-to-head record is pretty evenly split
  • Brazil have won seven times, Canada six, and the other six resulted in draws

Team news

Like the USWNT, Brazil will definitely be feeling quite aggrieved about the result from their last match. Just like with the Stars and Stripes, they, too, were frustrated by a staunchly defensive Sweden who pushed the match yet again to spot-kicks to book their spot in the next round at the hosts' expense. Interestingly enough, Brazil had thrashed Sweden 5-1 in the group stages, but it naturally appears that the Swedes learned their lesson and decided to put every player behind the ball in their semi-final match.

By contrast, Canada, who are relatively new to the Olympics scene will certainly be pleased with their performance so far, which included a historic win over Germany. John Herdman's side have a chance at a second consecutive bronze medal shouild they manage to overcome their bad luck in Brazil's backyard, and one clash that women's football fans will be looking forward to seeing is Marta vs. Christine Sinclair. Arguably the most decorated players of their respective nations, and in women's football in general, both will be eager to inspire their sides in order to at least pick up a medal.

Match facts and other historical stats - Sweden vs. Germany

  • Germany have scored 12 goals so far; Sweden, by contrast, have just scored three
  • This is the fewest amount for any women's side to qualify for a final in the tournament's history

Team news

It may not be the prettiest football, but it has worked. Pia Sundhage, who guided the USWNT to gold in 2008 and 2012, now could do the same with her native Sweden this summer. Although regarded as a relatively solid side, Sweden were by no means expected to get to this juncture, and even more impressive is the path they had to take to get here.

They had to defeat reigning champions USA and Brazil en route to booking their spot in the final. And, at the very least, they will be heading home with a medal in hand. The question is: Can they "pull a Leicester City" and shock yet another women's powerhouse?

As for Germany, Silvia Neid's ladies have been largely in imperious form at this Olympics. Bayern Munich's Melanie Behringer is pretty much a guarantee for the top goal-scorer prize, with five so far at this competition. However, despite being the no. 2 side in the world, Germany have yet to clinch gold at an Olympic Games, with three bronze medals earned in 2000, 2004, and 2008 whilst missing out entirely at the 2012 edition.
