Team news

Nigeria

Despite only having a few players plying their trades in Europe's bigger leagues, Nigeria nonetheless have managed to navigate their way through this tournament. Samson Siasia's side rebounded from a 2-0 reversal in their last group stage against Colombia to overpower Denmark in the quarter-finals by the same score-line, and will be hoping to take down another European side later today.

Germany

Although they have enjoyed success at World Cups and Euro tournaments, Germany have yet to win a gold medal in Olympic competition. Their best ever performance so far has been two third-placed finishes in 1964 and 1988, but Horst Hrubesch's lads have been in sparkling form and are a serious threat to Brazil's quest at winning this competition on home soil.

Germany will be coming into this match having cruised to a very comfortable and deserved 4-0 win over a Portugal side that was simply no match for them once things opened up in the second half. In fact, had they been more clinical - with only 50 per cent of their 20 attempts being on goal - the score-line would definitely have been a lot more lopsided in their favor.

Out of their 19 goals, six have been scored by Arsenal starlet Serge Gnabry. An additional five have been contributed by Nils Petersen, who plies his trade for recently promoted Freiburg. Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen's Julian Brandt has been the go-to assist man for his side, chipping in with seven so far - and will be eager to add more for Hrubesch's side in this crunch clash.

Although they did not have it easy against tough opponents like Mexico or South Korea - during which they conceded five, but scored five - no side so far has been able to shut Germany out, and considering Nigeria's less-than airtight defense, it doesn't look like they will manage to do so, either.
