Match stats - South Korea vs Mexico

  • This will be the fourth meeting between these teams in an Olympic tournament. Two draws and one win for South Korea have been this tie's previous results.

  • South Korea eliminated Mexico from the 2004 Olympics. Mexico needed to win against the Asian side, but the Taeguk Warriors defeated El Tri 1-0.

  • South Korea and Mexico's senior teams have played 12 matches. Mexico has won six, with two draws and four wins for the Asian crew.

Team news

After beating Fiji in stylish fashion with an 8-0 scoreline, the South Korean defense wasn't able to defend their ground agaisnt Germany, conceding a late goal that has them facing elimination. A win by the Korean crew would confirm their spot in the final stage of the tournament, and would give them the chance to repeat their performance from four years ago, in which they played the third-place match against Japan.

On the other side of the pitch, Mexico's title defense was handed a serious injury blow when their captain and all-time top scorer, Oribe Peralta, was ruled out of the tournament due to a broken nose. Furthermore, midfielder Rodolfo Pizarro was also dismissed from the team after he picked up a fibula injury that will require surgery.

Peralta (left) and Pizarro had their jerseys signed by their team-mates, moments after their injuries were confirmed by Mexico's medical staff.

Match stats - Colombia vs Nigeria

  • This will be the fifth game between Colombia and Nigeria in all categories. Los Cafeteros have won three of those games.

  • Colombia has never made it past the Group Stage of an Olympic Football tournament.

  • Nigeria has made it twice to the Gold Medal match, both of them against Argentina. The Eagles won once (1996) and lost the other one (2008).

  • Colombia has scored the opening goal in their two previous games thanks to Teofilo Gutiérrez. Unfortunately for them, they haven't been able to hold on to their leads.

Team news

The Colombian team faces its first KO game, since a loss against Nigeria would see them bid farewell to the Olympic tournament. Two of their overage players, Teofilo Gutiérrez and Dorlan Pabón have kept their dreams alive, as both of them have scored for Los Cafeteros.

The Nigerian team was the main character of one of the most curious incidents prior to the start of the games. After being stranded in the U.S. due to problems with their tickets, they managed to arrive six hours before their tournament debut against Japan. Eventually, the Eagles overcame all adversity and took all the points against the Samurai Blue, defeating them 5-4.
