Match facts and other historical stats - Germany vs. Canada

  • Germany and Canada have met a total of 12 times (including ten friendlies)
  • Die Nationalelf have not just won every single one of those games...
  • ...but also have outscored Canada by a whopping margin of 39 to 12

Team news

Germany

Currently ranked second in women's football, Germany were expected to pretty much stroll through their group without fuss. However, it's not been as smooth sailing for Silvia Neid's side, and despite humiliating Zimbabwe 6-1, they needed a late goal to salvage a draw against Australia. Although they do have the joint-highest goals so far (with eight), 75 per cent of those came in their opener against the African debutants.

Still, with players like Alexandra Popp and Dzsenifer Marozsán within their ranks, Germany are not a side to be taken lightly. They've qualified for all but one Olympics tournament (in 2012) and will be determined to do better than the three bronze medals they have earned thus far.

Canada

Having beat Australia and debutants Zimbabwe, Canada have already booked a quarter-finals berth, but John Herdman's squad have a golden opportunity to make history. For starters, all they need is one point to top their quartet - something they have never done before at an Olympics tournament. And more important, a draw would mark the first time they have not lost to Germany (although, of course, a win would even sweeter).

With one eye on the next round, Herdman could opt to rotate his squad to avoid any injuries. Veteran striker Christine Sinclair, who has scored two goals so far, could be given a rest, which could give unused players like teenager Deanne Rose or rising talent Nichelle Prince a chance to play. It will be interesting, however, to see if 21-year-old striker Janine Beckie features for the full 90 or is given a rest. So far, she's the tournament's leading goal-scorer with three goals, and she and Sinclair have scored all of Canada's five goals.

Broadcast info - South Africa vs. Brazil

Who's playing: Hosts Brazil are already into the quarter-finals and are expected to cruise to a comfortable win over South Africa. With the men's team struggling, the onus is on Marta and her colleagues to end Brazil's long wait for Olympic gold in football.

What time: Tuesday, July 9th at 18.00 PST/21.00 EST/01.00 UTC/02.00 BST/03.00 CET (Wednesday)

What stadium: This game will be played at the Amazônia Arena. Located in Manaus, it has a maximum capacity of about 44,300.

Match facts and other historical stats - South Africa vs. Brazil

  • This will be the first ever meeting between South Africa and Brazil
  • South Africa are making their Olympics debut at this tournament

Team news

South Africa

Although South Africa have been already eliminated from this tournament, they will, to some extent, be hoping to at least grab a historic goal before heading home. The debutants put up a good resistance against traditional women's powerhouse Sweden, only to be undone by a later goal, and they were very unfortunate to lose 2-0 to China after impressing during some spells of that match.

Brazil

As Neymar and his colleagues continue to struggle, it's been a much better tournament for Marta and her teammates. The hosts have already scored a whopping eight goals, including five during an absolute demolition of Sweden in their past game.

All Brazil need is a draw to be crowned group winners, but, of course, playing in front of their home fans, the Canarinhas will be looking to make it three wins out of three as they look forward to their next opponent in the quarter-finals.
