Match facts and other historical stats - Argentina vs. Algeria

  • Argentina and Algeria will be meeting for the first time at the Olympics this weekend
  • So far, Argentina  have yet to lose to Les Verts in either competitive or friendly fixtures. This includes the senior team and the u-20 and u-17 squads

Team news

Argentina

Simply put, Argentina have not started out their Olympic campaign on the best footing. They were left frustrated by Portugal, who overpowered them to clinch a 2-0 win despite taking fewer shots (12 vs. 18) and only having slightly more possession (51 vs. 49 per cent). However, what Portugal did do was make those shots count. Out of the 12 attempted by Rui Jorge's side, six were on target, whilst Argentina only managed to threaten Portugal's goal on three occasions.

Despite being his team's top goalscorer, with nine goals during qualifiers, Giovanni Simeone - son of Atletico Madrid boss Diego - had to settle for a spot on the bench and did not feature until the last ten or so minutes of the match. It will be interesting to see how Julio Olarticoecha opts to rotate his squad for Argentina's next match - which is a must-win if they want to keep their next stage ambitions intact.

Algeria

Unlike Argentina, who were blanked against Portugal, Algeria nearly pulled off what would have been a deserved comeback. At the end of the first 45, Les Verts were facing a 2-0 deficit. However, they came alive in the second period by first halving the difference and even after Honduras restored their two-goal advantage, they kept on fighting until the very end.

Unfortunately, that match finished as 3-2, and one doesn't get extra points for effort. Honduras managed to hang on for the win, despite Algeria out-shooting them by 28 to nine. And playing pretty was out of the question - Honduras picked up a whopping 24 fouls as opposed to their opponents' ten. Algeria's profligacy, however, ended up costing them, as they only managed six attempts on goal, and they will have to start making those chances count as they will not be given as many opportunities when it comes to taking on Argentina.

Broadcast info - Sweden vs. Nigeria

Who's playing: Having had to settle for a draw with Colombia, U-21 Euro champions Sweden will be eager to pick up their first win against Nigeria - who won their match versus Japan - this Sunday. Although Nigeria faced what can be best described as a tragic comedy of errors leading up to their arrival - with flights being cancelled, delayed, and the like -  they put in a good shift and now top their quartet.

What stadium: This game will be played at the Amazônia Arena. Located in Manaus, it has a maximum capacity of 44,300.

Match facts and other historical stats - Sweden vs. Nigeria

  • Both Sweden and Nigeria have won one Olympic gold medal so far. However, Sweden's win was in 1948, before this became an u-23 tournament
  • Nigeria made history in 1996 as the first African nation to win Olympic gold
  • This will be the first ever meeting between Sweden and Nigeria

Team news

Sweden

Sweden come into this match feeling somewhat disappointed. The U-21 European champions thought they had done enough to seal all three points against Colombia, only for a late penalty to undo their hard work and see them drop two points. Still, they are not out of the running for a knockout spot, albeit Nigeria could present them with an even tougher challenge.

After conceding a penalty, Sweden appeared to be quite rattled and in fact, nearly threw away all three points. Håkan Ericson will be hoping that his lads can rebound after this if they want to have a fighting chance at containing Nigeria, who were in solid form in their opening fixture.

Nigeria

As for Nigeria, they managed to come out on top in what can be best described as the most entertaining match so far of this tournament. Nine goals were scored during their clash with Japan, and from start to finish, it was a game full of plenty of end to end action. Arguably, the biggest star on the night was 21-year-old Etebo Oghenekaro, who once spent time on trial with Udinese, but his then-club, Nigerian outfit Warri Wolves, were unable to agree on the financial details with the Zebrette.

Currently, Oghenekaro, who scored a poker against Japan plies his trade with Portuguese side Feirense. Although he just joined them in January, if he manages to continue excelling at this tournament, he just may be able to stake a claim for a move to a more prominent side in the near future.
