The Gunners have taken a big step towards signing Inter’s Argentine striker.

Reports recently emerged claiming that Arsenal were chasing after an Argentine striker from Serie A. Fans hoping for Gonzalo Higuain were quickly let down, as their target was Mauro Icardi instead.

Speculation is that Arsene Wenger’s crew have identified the Inter Milan forward as a candidate for their striker role, with the 23-year-old keen on leaving the Nerazzurri for the right offer.

The player’s agent – also his wife – Wanda Nara has made it clear to Inter that the Argentine is seeking a better deal to remain in Italy. Otherwise, the Argentine will leave for an improved contract elsewhere.

Now, Corriere dello Sport write that the Gunners have made contact with Wanda and have set up a meeting with Icardi’s agent. A bid is being prepared, believed to worth €45m to €50m.

Although that is nowhere near being a bargain buy, it is a more affordable fee to pay for the north London giants compared to Napoli’s €94m asking price for Higuain. Icardi could stand to earn €6m a year should he accept Arsenal’s offer.

Mauro netted 16 goals last season in 33 games, but his standout season came in 2014/15 where he scored 22 goals for Inter Milan.
