Ozil is yet to come to terms with the defeat to France in Euro 2016.

German midfielder Mesut Ozil has opened up for the first time since his country was bundled out of the European Championship by hosts France. A brace from Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann was all the hosts needed to destroy the German machine on Thursday evening at Stade Velodrome. After the full-time whistle, the Gunners midfield maestro was consoled by his club teammates Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud.

Germany started the game on a high but failed to convert their chances into goals. Thomas Muller was particularly wasteful in front of goal, a performance that extended his goal drought in the tournament. The Bayern Munich star is yet to score a goal at the European Championship, but has 10 World Cup goals to his name.

After the defeat Ozil posted the following message on Instagram. He described the defeat as ‘bitter’ and that Germany’s expected victory ‘was not meant to be.’

Manchester United target Paul Pogba also consoled the 27-year-old ex-Real Madrid star with the following post:

The Arsenal midfielder is expected to light up the Premier League next season for the Emirates Stadium outfit. At the Euro 2016, he scored one goal and provided one assist, but his efforts were not good enough to fire Die Mannschaft to the finals.
