After Argentina's loss to Chile in the final of the Copa America, Lionel Messi dropped the major bombshell that he will retire from international football.

Speaking after Messi's painful loss, the 29-year old announced he would not not continue to play with his national side.

"For me the national team is over, I've done all I can, I've been in four finals and it hurts not to be a champion. It's a hard moment for me and the team, and it's difficult to say, but it's over with the Argentina team."

In a recent interview with BBC, Lionel Messi's biographer Luca Caioli has expressed his thoughts on 'La Pulga's' retirement after he failed to secure another Copa America title.

The Argentina ace carried his team to the final of the Copa America Centenario for the second consecutive time but was left heartbroken again, following Argentina's penalty shoot-out loss to Chile. These back-to-back failures for the Barcelona goalscorer has prompted him to retire from his national team.

Luca Caioli, who published Lionel's famous biography 'Messi, el niño que no podía crecer (2008)', revealed his opinions on the five-time Balon D'Oro winner's decision on hanging up his boots for La Albiceleste.

When asked if he believes whether or not this will be the end for Messi in an Argentina shirt, Luca responded:

"I don't know, probably his decision or his words after yesterday's disaster, after his fourth final loss probably can change. We heard Kun Aguero explaining that he talked with Messi saying he is in a bad moment. You lose a penalty, but you can change the idea. And you can see in the internet and Twitter how many fans wrote 'No te vayas Lionel.' It is also the title of OLE, which is the most important sports journal in Buenos Aires. And I think there are a lot of people that say that or say Maradona never left La Albiceleste but also Maradona stopped with the national team in 1990 but came back in 1993 for the terrible World Cup of the United States."

He then was asked if it will be a huge blow to Messi's stunning resume if he does not return to play for Argentina.

"I think so, but I think Lionel prefers to not win the Balon D'Oro but win a trophy with Argentina. I think he has a pure Argentinian spirit. When he was young, he was offered to play for Spain, but he chose Argentina and has never been successful. Just one time, in the U-21 Olympics, he won a gold medal and his first title with U-21 with Kun Aguero. Then, with the main national team he lost."

Caioli added:

"He has received a lot of criticism; Maradona said two weeks ago Messi has no personality to be the captain of La Albiceleste, and fans call him 'pecho frio' which means chicken in English."
