A devastated Leo revealed that his international career is no more after a heartbreaking defeat to Chile in the Copa America Centenario final

Whether Lionel Messi will go back on his decision to quit on international football remains in the hearts of Argentina fans, as the 2-year-old superstar revealed in the wake of their devastating defeat to Chile on penalties (again) in the Copa America Centenario final that this will be the end of his run with La Albiceleste.

Fans have been pleading with the Barca legend torethink his decision, but with no result so far. However, the campaign to stop La Pulga from walking away from the national side has been joined by two influential figures of the South American country: President Mauricio Macri and iconic football legend Diego Maradona.

As per Goal, a spokesperson of the Argentina president told AFP: “He [Macri] called him and told him how proud he feels of the national team's performance and asked him not to listen to the criticism.”

The president also tweeted “I hope the joy of seeing the best in the world will continue for many years more. #NoTeVayasLio.”, with the hashtag translating into “Don’t go Leo”.

Maradona, who coached Messi during his reign as La Albiceleste boss in the lead-up to and during the 2010 World Cup, has been a vocal critic of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner before, but plead with Leo not to walk away as he still has a lot to offer to the national side.

Speaking to La Nacion, the World Cup winner said: "Messi has to stay in the national team. He will go to Russia in form to be world champion.

"He has to rely more on boys who can help take the team forward and less on those who say they have to go.

"Those who are saying he should quit are doing it so that we won't see what a disaster Argentine football has become."

Three consecutive defeats in a major tournament final in the last three years left Messi visibly upset and distraught. It remains to be seen whether this recent show of love will cause a change in heart for Leo.
