Wales and Northern Ireland face off in the last 16 phase of the European Championship.

Wales finished top of Group B in their first major international tournament since 1958, a jaw-dropping performance that has earned them a place in the last 16 of the Euros in France. They finished above group favorites England, Slovakia and Russia and are now set to face Northern Ireland at the knockout stage. The Dragons beat Slovakia and Russia but fell to England in their group games.

The Northerners on the other hand finished third in Group C behind Poland and Germany respectively, but qualified as third-placed finishers. Out of their last three games in the group, they managed one win and two defeats.

On paper, Wales have the upper hand here thanks to their increased confidence and impressive performance in Group B. Northern Ireland on the other hand struggled to qualify after losing to Poland and Germany, but finally found a win over Ukraine to move to the next stage of the competition.

Head to Head

The Norn Iron have faced the Dragons eight times in their history. Out of the eight meetings, Michael O’Neill’s side have won once, drawn four times and lost thrice against Chris Coleman’s men. Their most recent meeting ended in a one-all draw in an international friendly played on March 24 this year.

Team news

Wales

Coach Chris Coleman is expected to stick to the same squad that beat Russia 3-0 in their last match of the group. He has no injury concerns ahead of this fixture against the European Championship debutants.

Northern Ireland

Michael O’Neill also has a host of talents to choose from, as he does not have any injury concerns. Kyle Lafferty is expected to start from the bench but Connor Washington and Jamie Ward could keep their respective positions.

Wales have gained a lot of confidence in this competition. Having faced the likes of Russia, Slovakia and England, they have nothing to fear when they face lowly-ranked Northern Ireland. Their opponents are also known for their composure and hard work, something that could work to their advantage in this match. But with the availability of the likes of Gareth Bale, who is the top scorer in the competition with three goals, and assist wizard Aaron Ramsey on Wales’ side, you can back them to win this match.
