If you had never heard of Dimitri Payet prior to UEFA Euro 2016, odds are you do now and are paying attention to the West Ham ace. The France superstar has been the host nation’s standout player so far, emerging as an early contender for both the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament awards after only two games.
The West Ham ace has racked in rave reviews, and is now being linked with one of the world’s biggest clubs, as a result. According to the Telegraph, none other than 11-time Champions League winners Real Madrid are eyeing the 28-year-old.
With 2 goals and an assist to his name already, including his wondergoal in the opening day 2-1 win over Romania, he tops the goalscoring chart. Furthermore, Los Blancos look destined to cash in on James Rodriguez and Isco, the Spanish giants could be on the hunt for a new attacking midfielder.
However, a move for Payet may prove difficult given that the Bleues international is tied down by a long-term contract to his current employers the Hammers. Having only moved to Upton Park last summer, he was quickly handed a new deal which will keep him at West Ham until 2020.
Slaven Bilic’s boys will play in Europe next season, albeit it will only be in the Europa League, whilst they’re gearing up for a move to the Olympic Stadium. Thus, it will be interesting to see whether Payet decides to stick it out with West Ham ahead of an exciting future, or respond to the calls of Real Madrid.
