La Bicolor made it to the KO stage against all odds, and they will try to earn a third-straight semi-final spot against James Rodriguez's Colombia.

After an unexpected finish of the tournament's Group Stage for both teams, Peru and Colombia will face each other with nothing but the semi-finals on their minds.

Ricardo Gareca's crew made their footballing skills prevail against teams such as Ecuador and Brazil, helping them to win the complicated and controversial Group B. On the other hand, Colombia seemed to be the most qualified to win Group A, but an unexpected loss against Costa Rica saw them drop to the second spot.

The stage is set at MetLife Stadium for quite a stunning match, which will hand a ticket to the centennial tournament's semi-finals. The team that wins will face the winner of the Quarter final matchup between Mexico and Chile.

Perú

La Bicolor made it to the knockout stage of the tournament surrounded by controversy, as Raúl Ruidiaz scored the game-winning goal against Brazil with a handball. Prior to that controversial win, Peru had won the first game of the tournament against Haiti (1-0) and followed that performance with an exciting 2-2 draw against Ecuador.

One thing that Gareca's men have to work on is their accuracy in front of goal. Peru only scored four goals in the Group stage, the second fewest achieved by any of the teams qualified for the quarter finals. With that in mind, striker Paolo Guerrero will try to step it up and achieve the same form that granted him the goal scoring title in the two most recent Copa editions. If he can't deliver, the aforementioned Ruidiaz and Cristian Cueva will be Peru's go-to guys.

Here's Raul Ruidiaz's controversial finish against Brazil.

Colombia

Los Cafeteros seemed to be on a roll before the final group stage match, when a combative Costa Rican side shocked them and kept Pekerman's men away from the group's top spot. The good news for the Argentine tactician were provided by his medical staff, who cleared all of the team's injured footballers to play this match, including star midfielder James Rodriguez.

Since we're talking about Real Madrid's playmaker, his influence in Colombia's game plan has been superb. Prior to the final group stage match, Rodriguez had been directly involved in three of Colombia's four goals, scoring twice and handing out an assist. The Colombians haven't reached the semi-final stage of the tournament since the 2004 edition, and if they want to do so this time, Rodriguez's contribution will be key.

Have a look at James' second goal of the tournament.

  • Since the tournament's 2001 edition, Perú and Colombia have played two Quarter final games, with each team winning once: Colombia back in the aforementioned edition, and with Peru making it to the semis in 2011.

  • Colombia dominates the all-time series against Perú, winning 17 out of the 52 matches played between them.

  • These teams shared Group C of the 2015 Copa América. The Chilean city of Temuco witnessed a goal-less draw between the South American sides.

  • Colombia outclassed Peru in their most recent meeting: a 2018 World Cup Qualifier played in Cali that ended with a 2-0 score.
