Newcastle legend Alan Shearer believes Danny Drinkwater deserved a spot in England's Euro 2016 squad after a phenomenal season with Leicester City.

The defensive midfielder played a critical role in Claudio Ranieri's squad, as they clinched their first ever English Premier League title. Drinkwater delivered outstanding performances for Leicester, but it seems like that wasn't enough to represent England for Euro 2016.

England boss Roy Hodgson cut the 26-year-old footballer from the provisional squad on Tuesday, leaving the Three Lions fans angry by the coach's shocking decision. Danny-Drinkwater

In a recent interview with TalkSPORT, Alan Shearer, who netted 30 goals in 60 games for England, says it was wrong to drop Drinkwater from the team.

"Drinkwater has had a magnificent season. He deserved to be in the squad.

"Once again, Hodgson has gone for reputation rather than form, and I hope that gamble pays off for him.

"He's made that decision; he's got to stick by it and let's wait and see now."

The controversy of Hodgson picking Jack Wilshere over Danny Drinkwater when making the final cut for their Euro team spiraled out of control on Wednesday. England legend's comment may make sense, knowing that Wilshere hasn't played the full 90 minutes of a game since Arsene Wenger’s men lost 2-1 to Southampton on September 23, 2014. Since then, ex-Premier League star Cristiano Ronaldo has bagged 117 goals and Leeds United have had six managers.

Despite Drinkwater's shocking drop from the national side, Shearer is excited to see the potential of the youngsters in the group. Manchester United up-and-coming star Marcus Rashford is among the seven players under 23 who will travel to France for this top-flight tournament.

"It is obviously a young squad, a very energetic squad, and a lot of the youngsters in the squad have had brilliant seasons and deserve to be there.

"We will score goals and create chances, but my one worry is defensively. Certainly from the two friendly games recently that would be a concern.

"But there is no doubt with Harry Kane up there, with Dele Alli, we will go forward, we will look exciting, and we will score goals."

Regardless of the massive talent on the England team, Shearer does not believe Hodgson will obtain European glory this summer, stating:

"I don't think we will win it. I think we might get to a semi-final.

"Having said that, I didn't think Leicester would win the Premier League, so you never know! It has been a mad season so that might just continue.

"As long as they show us some progression which, let's face it, shouldn't be hard from the last couple of tournaments. But I don't think many people really expect us to win it."
