Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone congratulated Real Madrid on a deserved victory, but admitted that the defeat in the Champions League final had 'put years' on him.

Los Rojiblancos did everything right this season, beating two giant clubs Barcelona and Bayern Munich to reach the final. However, his lads failed again to clinch European glory, losing 5-3 on penalties to rivals Real Madrid after a 1-1 draw at the San Siro.

This has been Torres and Co.'s second loss in three years to Los Blancos, but Simeone gave his best wishes to his opponents, while also reflecting on the painful loss.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, the Argentinian manager openly confessed about the harshness of this tragic defeat and it leaving him time 'to think things out'.

"I'd like to congratulate Real Madrid. Once again they were superior to us, this time at penalties. The team that wins is always the best team. I don't believe in excuses.

"I need to go home and heal my wounds. I've never had it easy but two finals in three years is a magnificent achievement.

"We need to continue working. I need to think things out on my part.

"It puts a lot of years on you. I don't know which defeat hurts the most.

"What really hurts me is to see the hurt of the people who've paid to come here - I feel a bit responsible that I wasn't able to give them what they wanted. That's what really hurts.

"But I feel proud of my players. We had to defeat Barcelona and Bayern [to get to the final]. I love my players."

Despite Diego Simeone's budget and financial resources compared to other elite clubs, Los Colchoneros' coach has made history with his Spanish side. In the past years, Simeone has been incredibly successful leading his team to three major trophies, including La Liga title in 2014. However, he just can't seem to get his hands on the glorious European silverware, with Zidane's men stealing it for the second time in three years.

Atletico Madrid bagged zero trophies this season and are now desperate to return stronger for the upcoming season with the aim to obtain titles.
