Hungary have qualified for their first Euro tournament in over 40 years, and we take a look at the coach and squad hoping to try their luck at France this summer.

One of the interesting things with widening the field at this summer's Euro tournament means that it will give eight other nations a chance to compete on the international stage. Some of these teams are debutants, whilst others have been absent from international competition for decades. Hungary is one side that falls into the latter category, and after a 42 year absence, they will be hoping to see how far they can go in France this summer.

Hungary's Euro record

To date, Hungary have participated at two prior Euro tournaments. In their first appearance, which took place in 1964, they finished in third, and eight years later, they ended up in fourth place.

However following that, they endured a long and frustrating period of disappointment in which they did not qualify for a single Euro tournament from 1976 until 2016. And even to secure their spot at this summer's edition did not come easy. Hungary ended up finishing third in their group and had to navigate their way through a tough play-off against Norway to book their place in their first UEFA Euro competition in 42 years.

Hungary's current form

Hungary's last match before heading to France will be a friendly clash with Germany. So far in 2016, they have managed to pick up two draws, a 1-1 result against Croatia and most recently a scoreless stalemate versus the Ivory Coast. In 2015, despite a loss to Greece, they deservedly sealed third place and a spot in the play-offs. After edging out Norway, Hungary then were able to book their place among the 24 teams competing at this summer's upcoming UEFA Euro tournament.

The loss to Greece was Hungary's only loss since the start of 2015, but this impressive run will certainly come under much strain when they take on Germany next month.

In terms of rankings, Hungary are currently 18th in the world as per FIFA and 11th in UEFA.

The man on the tactician's bench

53-year-old Bernd Storck has been in charge of the Hungarian national team since July 2015. Prior to that, the retired defender managed a whole slew of teams at both club and national level; some of these sides included serving as assistant manager at Hertha Berlin, Wolfsburg, and Borussia Dortmund and national team boss of both the youth and senior Kazakhstan sides.

German tactician Stork will be tasked with leading Hungary at their first Euro competition in over four decades this summer

As a player, Storck never featured for Germany, and so will be leading a side at a Euro tournament for the first time. Given that Hungary are viewed as one of the weaker sides at this competition, they can certainly use that to their advantage, as most of their opponents will certainly underestimate them. However, as to how far they will be able to go remains to be seen.
