We now profile the country that will face UEFA European Championship defending champions Spain in their opening Euro 2016 fixture.

Czech Republic's UEFA Euro history

In 1994, Czech Republic made their debut as an independent nation. So far, their best finish is their second place finish in the 1996 edition of the UEFA European Championship. Since then, they have advanced from the first round twice, in 2004 and 2012. One of their most notable performances was their dramatic comeback victory against the Netherlands, as they reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Euro 2004.

Recent form

In 2015, they played a total of seven international matches, winning four and losing three. In 2016, they have played two games so far; a one-all draw against Sweden and a 1-0 defeat to Scotland. Both matches were international friendlies. According to the latest FIFA world rankings as of May 2016, the Eastern European side sits at the 29th position.

Pavel-Vrba-Czech-Republic

Manager's profile

Since January 2014, Pavel Vrba has taken the reins of the national team, but has been unsuccessful in bringing home any glory for his country. The ex-Viktoria Plzeň manager led his former team to victory in the Czech Cup for the first time in club history and was also voted as the Czech Coach of the Year three consecutive times in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Moreover, Vrba is popular for applying his offensive football philosophy, as he is relying on his tactics to get far in this high-profile tournament.
